Slow or Unresponsive Crane Movement
If the crane moves slowly or doesn’t respond to controls, check the hydraulic fluid level first. Low fluid is the most common cause. Inspect for leaks in hoses, fittings, and cylinders. Air in the hydraulic system can also cause sluggish operation and may require bleeding.
Hydraulic Fluid Leaks
Leaks can occur at cylinder seals, hose connections, and valve bodies. Small leaks should be addressed promptly before they become major problems. Always use the manufacturer-recommended hydraulic fluid and replace worn seals immediately.
Engine and Mechanical Issues
Engine Won’t Start or Stalls
Check the battery, starter, and fuel system. In cold weather, ensure proper fuel additives are used. Regular maintenance of the carrier engine is essential for reliable operation.
Unusual Noises During Operation
Grinding, squealing, or knocking sounds indicate mechanical problems. Grinding from the turntable bearing suggests worn bearings or inadequate lubrication. Squealing from the boom may indicate worn bushings or insufficient grease.
Boom and Structural Issues
Boom Won’t Extend or Retract
Check for binding, damaged sections, or hydraulic issues. Inspect the boom for visible damage or debris in the track. If the boom is stuck, do not force it – consult a qualified technician.
Crane Won’t Lift Rated Capacity
First verify you’re using the correct load chart for your configuration. Check for hydraulic pressure issues, worn pump components, or relief valve problems. Never exceed the crane’s rated capacity.
Electrical System Problems
Electrical issues can cause erratic crane behavior. Check battery connections, fuses, and wiring harnesses for damage. Modern crane trucks have complex electronic control systems that may require diagnostic equipment for troubleshooting.
